Pages 144-161 Media has various effects on audiences and there’s no doubt about that. People absorb media messages, whether it’s intentional or unintentional. Media platforms must be sure to be cautious of any immoral content. There are vulnerable people on media websites that can’t censor what they can see, or they don’t have other people to monitor it for them. No one should have the intention of negatively influencing today’s youth or those with easily influenced minds. Some people use the media rather than letting the media use them. People use media to live out fantasies from other worlds that they may have. All types of media serve the same function no matter how much they differ. Pages 161-171 Audiences like to escape reality. Many people use television shows to do that. Entertainment devices are working for peoples’ needs. Everyone’s utopia is different. There's no limitation to what entertainment can do for everyone. The goal is to get audiences engaged. Some people try to bring politics into entertainment, but that would be putting stops and limitations on media and entertainment, which is the exact opposite of what the media should want to do. Audiences want to be one with the media they consume and use it to their advantage. Pages 173-179 Some researchers are interested in gaining the perspective of the audience. They try to resist doing this, but sometimes they issue questionnaires to the audiences to collect their opinions on varying media. However, this method isn’t secure. Questionnaires are easy to misinterpret, and the questions may not be fitting to what the researcher is trying to ask. Varying types of media attract different audiences, but the media brings them all together in interesting ways. Each type of media’s audience can have differing opinions on different aspects on life based on how they interpret things. There are limitations to media, so audiences don’t always know the whole story. We will never know how other people consuming media are, and we may not even know how ourselves are consuming it.

Diversity and Cultural Citizenship
YouTube is a platform that is known for being open to a wide variety of audiences. No matter your religion, race, or ethnicity, YouTube allows people from all cultural backgrounds to upload content to their domain. Because of YouTube’s allowance of diversity, a lot of questions rise towards people who have experienced different things due to their different beliefs or culture. These questions have then led to debates about how people can pick up on things from the internet. However, the biggest factor in YouTube’s, or just the internet in general, is the power struggle between social groups that have existed for a long time and new social groups that are slowly rising to fruition. Many argue that the differences between social groups are pointless because they’re not creating better messages to their audience. Whether the social groups are individual or communal, they’re causing a divide in their viewers as opposed to bringing awareness to how communities should be working together and not against each other. People would rather see genuine conversations between two people with differing beliefs than see those same two people at each other’s throats. YouTube is also mainly used to spread activism to the viewers. One of the forms of activism that can be seen a lot on this platform is videos of people discussing how they struggled with their sexuality and came to terms with it with themselves, their friends, and their family. Some see YouTube allowing people to post videos on that topic as propaganda. People would believe this because if you have someone young and someone that could be easily influenced watching content of that sort, then it could spiral into that young and very easily influenced person following those footsteps. However, YouTube is just trying to give people a space to express themselves and share their personal stories because those stories may inspire others around them to come to terms with things that have happened in their own lives that may be similar. While YouTube is open to activists and what they’re standing up for, the platform also leaves room for people that want to criticize those activists and pick apart what they’re saying. People have analyzed this relationship between activists and critics and find that it draws more peoples’ attention if the two parties have conversations with one another. It brings both viewers from each side to one space and they can all pick each other's brains to try to understand where each person is coming from. Globalization and Localization YouTube is in the middle of showing people the ideas they like and are used to and exposing people to new ideas that are evolving in the world. These differentiating ideas are known as globalization and localization and they’re an important part of YouTube’s platform. There are both aspects on the site. When it comes to being global, YouTube falls under that category because YouTube is a part of the internet, which is accessible by any and everyone. However, when it comes to being local, YouTube isn’t so well known in that category. It’s hard to find videos on topics that aren’t largely discussed in the media. This is because some countries aren’t included in what is allowed to be posted on YouTube, which can restrict what a lot of people are able to see about what’s happening in that country. These countries and their citizens want YouTube to be localized to them, so they don’t feel pushed aside by the global aspect of the platform. YouTube is banned in some countries, like Turkey, for political reasons. It’s also banned in China for China’s governmental reasons. However, these countries are different from America in that they’re not overly interested in YouTube anyways, so they’re better off either way. However, YouTube still tries hard to get the attention of these countries to broaden the platform’s reach. YouTube’s main appeal is free speech, which isn’t something that is achievable by people in different countries. YouTube tries to regulate things that are politically offensive to these countries through advanced technology. Us, as viewers, don’t typically notice this until we want to look up a video and we can’ because it’s been removed. No matter what the platform’s control is, some governments have more control, and they’ll usually prevail in the end. YouTube as Cultural Archive A lot of people utilize YouTube to watch things from their past. This includes music videos, television shows, and commercials. People saying, they use YouTube for this reason shows that YouTube is a main form of a cultural archive. Cultural archives preserve things from generations so that they can be viewed later and bring back memories from one’s past. Therefore, a lot of people are going to YouTube to see things they already know, not things they’re trying to discover for the first time. People would rather go through all stages of nostalgia than experience something new. This is because people are comfortable with what they already know, and they don’t want to take a chance on something new. Companies within YouTube take advantage of this. Although it’s good for people to relive their past, YouTube also has limitations on that. Memory is a subjective idea to a lot of people. Many argue that memory is often not actually remembered correctly. Instead, it’s reshaped and molded into what people want it to be. Some things that have historical significance are abusive. There are things on the internet that are harsh, but they’re remembered differently than what they really are. Because of this, YouTube does remove some older content for other peoples’ protection. YouTube does its best with this, but it’s still a work in progress

This a link to the PowerPoint as well. After revising my magazine cover, I decided I wanted to keep it this way. Through Canva, I was able to add to the picture rather than take away from it. I feel that the little subtitles add to the table of contents and the double page spread and they all match. I used both white and black colored fonts to go with the picture.
After revising my table of contents the first time, I decided to keep it revised this way. I feel that this table of contents goes well with my cover and double page spread. The contents match the goal of my magazine, which is to highlight trends, but make them personal.
From my original double page spread that I posted about, I only really changed a few things about the page on the left. I changed the quote in the upper right corner to a red font color because I felt that it made the quote the most visible against the background and it also matches the shoes of the male of the left, so the color isn't random. I also bolded the information on the bottom two corners and moved them ever so slightly, so that they'd be more visible as well. I made this double page spread and its original form in Canva.
The big guy, or conglomerate, in media is a company that owns major media distributors. In music media, the big guy would be Sony Music Entertainment. They're considered a larger player in media because they control a majority of today's music market. Sony provides music internationally. On the other hand, a little guy in media is any media that is free of influences from bigger sources. A little guy in music media would be XL Recordings. XL Recordings produces music internationally as well. Sony produces music because they own other record labels as well. They're just the owners of those record labels, but they're the ones who do the actually writing, recording, and finalizing process. XL Recordings has a similar process, but theirs is more intimate to the artist they're working with. Both music labels also have to go through the process of advertising and handling copyright issues. Both reach their audience, promote, and deliver their product by using marketing and advertising through prerelease videos and countdowns to the day the song/album is released. They then offer the music on a wide range of streaming platforms in order to reach a wider audience. Advantages of being the big guy is that you have a lot of power over the record labels you own. As the big guy, you get to decide what is put out there and what isn't, which has it's benefits. However, with being the big guy, you lose touch with each artist under the labels you own, in my opinion. I feel like that's a disadvantage because it leaves big guys, like Sony, out of the picture in a way. Advantages of being the little guy in music is that you have what the big guys don't, and that's intimacy. Having a connection with your artist and the music they're making will make the smaller able more into and more dedicated to what they're producing and distributing. However, as a little guy, it can be a disadvantage because it's difficult to promote yourself. Getting yourself and your label out there is a difficult thing to do, especially as an independent. But you have the willpower to do it, then being the little guy isn't so bad after all.
On the left is my original table of contents and on the right is my original table of contents. I changed the background color because I felt that the color was a better background contrast and didn't look so dull. I also changed some of the wording on the titles above the page numbers, just to make it them fit in better. The fonts are slightly changed just for appearance purposes. I made both of these table of contents on Canva. Lastly, I added a line between the two columns of content, so that it looked neater and more organized.
My own experiences with media consumption illustrate wider patterns and trends in audience behavior because if an audience picks up something they find funny, they'll turn it into a trend. For example, there's a podcast I watch that's created by two people who have been on YouTube for a very long time. The podcast is focused on any current internet drama that's going on between people that are also well known on YouTube or any other popular platform. This is marketable to anyone who keeps up with or is somewhat knowledgable on the drama they discuss because it's interesting to see other influencers shed light on the topic. Recently, on the podcast one of the YouTubers said something and it made the other YouTuber start to poke at her about what she said because it was very comical. The viewers of the podcast then picked up on the YouTuber poking at her and made the moment on the podcast into a trend where people recreate it as a scene. This is good in various ways because the trend brings more attention to their podcast and they're also getting recognition for being entertaining personalities. The podcast is also used to talk about serious topics in the social media world. The YouTubers bring attention to a lot of serious things happening in today's world, which also reaches out now to an audience that can relate to the serious topics. Their range of topics is pretty wide and it makes the podcast easier to distribute to different audiences.
1. Setting: Setting is an essential element to mise en scene because it's what the viewers are going to be staring at. It's important that the setting is visually pleasing because, if not, it can turn away viewers from watching as soon as the movie or media starts. It can also say a lot about the characters. If we see the setting as messy versus clean, that can say a lot about the character in question. The audience can make inferences from the setting about how the character is going to be.
2. Decor: Decor is an essential element to mise en scene because a lot of decor included in settings is there for a reason. Certain decorations can provided a foreshadowing element to the media the viewers are watching. For example, if there's a book included with the decor of a setting and then the audience sees that book later on, they'll understand the significance of the book being included in the decor in the first place. Decor is a good way to incorporate small symbolic items. 3. Lighting: Lighting is an essential element to mise en scene because lighting can portray the mood of movies or media. Lighting that is very bright can portray a feeling of happiness and add light emotions to the media. Dark lighting implies something not so happy. It could be in relation to something not good or sad. These emotions are relayed to the audience and the audience can relate to what's happening in the movie. 4. Depth of Space: Depth of space is an essential element to mise en scene because it creates different dimensions in media. Having a character or an object a certain distance away from something else creates illusions in the audience's mind and makes them wonder what the significance is. Depth of space can also represent two ideas at the same time. Those ideas could be age, happiness/sadness, or a change in time. 5. Costumes and Makeup: Costumes and makeup is an essential element to mise en scene because it says a lot about the character. Having messy clothes and sloppy makeup can say a lot about the character. On the other hand, a character's clothes and makeup being very neat says a lot about them as well. Costumes and makeup allow the audience to distinguish certain things about the characters and make their own judgements and assumptions about how the character is going to act for the rest of the movie or media. |
